+ Do unto others as you'd have done to you; + What is a soul contract?
Do unto others as you'd have done to you.
Have you had a day like this? You get to work, head to the water cooler and are settled at your desk by 9:00 am. You are about to begin your day when you are summoned to your boss' office. You walk-in, sit down and WHAM!!! Your boss slams you with critical comments of your work. You feel attacked, demoralized and demeaned. You try to explain yourself as best as possible, but it's fruitless. You walk out of his or her office feeling totally crushed. What is the first thing you want to do? You want to vent, yell, scream or cry, right? You are so upset that now you just want to let it rip with someone else, right? STOP!!!!!
Do unto others as you'd have done to you.
What does this mean? Basically it says do to other people what you want others to do to you. For example if you want others to be nice and respectful to you, you should treat them nicely and with respect. Yes, your boss was inconsiderate and didn't practice this with you, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't practice it with everyone you meet.
Do unto others as you'd have done to you sounds so simple yet, why don't we practice it? Does is take too much effort? No. I think it has to do with changing our thoughts and beliefs. We need to go back to the basics. How do we get back to the basics? We look at our thought patterns. We live in a society in which road rage, rudeness and 'getting an eye for an eye' is part of the norm. Our thoughts are created by our view of the world. Each one of us views the world differently. Our thoughts, feelings and perceptions of the world are based on our famial experience.
Our famial experience teaches us what is good, bad, right, wrong, safe, dangerous, happy, sad, pretty, ugly, loveable, unlovable, etc. We take these experiences and view them as our perception of the world. Everyone we meet, come into contact with or engage in is viewed through this perception. Think of it as everyone wearing their own unique pair of glasses in which they view the world. Think of all the millions of perceptions there are in the world. In reality, that is why we all see things to differently. For every person walking on this planet, there is a different perception.
When two people are in a relationship (whether it is boss/employee, boyfriend/girlfriend, friends, etc.) they each have their own perception of the experiences they share. The boss who is critical of his employees' work has either forgotten that he has had the same experience or he doesn't care about that. In any case, he 'does' onto his employee exactly what was done to him. This is how the cycle starts and it continues on and on. If he was more conscious of his experiences, he would realize that it is wrong for him to behave in this way.
Do unto others, can be taken to a deeper level when you keep in mind the karmic implications of our actions. The law of karma says 'every action equals and equal and opposite reaction. Here's an example: A relationship between two longtime lovers ends badly. One lover is a high-powered attorney who decides to bad-mouth his ex (who is also an attorney) to all his clients, friends, associates, etc. In effect, this attorney's bad-mouthing sets him up to realize the karmic effects of his behavior. His bad-mouthing is a negative action which will result in an equal and opposite negative reaction. What will happen to him? Perhaps he'll lose some clients. Perhaps he'll lose some friends. Perhaps he'll have something happen to him like an accident or a malpractice suit filed against him. His bad-mouthing can only bring him harm.
By practicing 'do unto others as you'd have done to you' you don't set yourself up for any negative karma. It is hard to practice this, but if you can incorporate it into your life you won't be sorry. We can all affect goodness in the world, but this starts with each of us individually. There is a belief system that says that you can establish a pattern or habit by doing something for 21 days in a row. If you practice 'do unto others as you'd have done to you' for 21 days you can establish a wonderful pattern in your thoughts. By doing this, maybe next time the boss goes bananas you won't be as affected by it. You'll see that he or she's going to have to pay with karma. Be the change you want to see in the world. By being that change, you can start a chain reaction that can spread to all the corners of the earth.
What is a soul contract?
For a moment imagine yourself not as a human being living in a body, but as a soul. You (this soul) decide to come to planet earth because you want to advance your spiritual growth. Before you can come to planet earth, you must set out your soul contract. You sit down with the masters and you tell them what you'd like to accomplish while on planet earth. For example:
You want to learn patience;
You want to be a mother or father;
You want to express creatively;
You want to love and experience the depths of love;
You want to understand humility;
You want to increase your ability to be selfless;
The list goes on and on. Through your discussion with the masters, you decide on the parents who'll raise you, the country, the circumstances and the issues that you'll experience with them. You'll also pick the people that you'll have as boyfriends, girlfriends, the lovers you'll meet that you've been with in other lifetimes and the children you'll bear. You'll choose the vocation(s) you'll perform, the experiences you need to have and not have and the way you'll leave the world when all of your tasks/lessons have been fulfilled. The masters, in turn, will call in the assistance of various angels, spirits, guides, etc., to be available to you in your journey. Finally, the contract negotiations are over and the contract has been agreed to, signed and all parties have shaken hands. You leave to go to planet earth and you are excited about the opportunity to expand and grow on a soul level. When you arrive on planet earth, you FORGET all about your contract. If you remembered your contract, you wouldn't have a full human experience. Why? Because you'd know what guy/girl to avoid and you wouldn't have your heart broken. By avoiding a broken heart, you'd wouldn't be able to deepen your ability to love fully, forgive, have compassion and understand the depths of the human heart. If you knew that the car accident you'd get into at age 21 was going to happen, you'd never learn to drive (or you'd move to NYC where no one drives). Maybe that car accident was meant to teach you a strong lesson about humility. You'd miss the lesson if you knew about your soul contract. We all have a unique contract that we've come here to fulfill. At times, life here on planet earth can be challenging. If we keep in mind that we are here to fulfill a soul contract, we can see beyond the frustrations and aggravations that fill our lives.
Often when I'm working with a client, there is a level of pain or sadness that arises because a love relationship isn't meant to be. In some cases, two souls that have been together in past incarnations will agree to meet again, but not be together in this incarnation. A lot of the time it has to do with the fact that each soul is striving for different levels of growth this time around.
I also come across clients who are straddled with debt, have had multiple marriages or lovers, are very career oriented and prefer success and fame to family and partnership, etc. The important thing to acknowledge is that the person who is straddled with debt chose that experience to learn something. The same is true for someone who has been married multiple times or someone who chooses career over family.
Most people aren't sure why they have come to the earth. They just know that they are here. Being here is not by chance. It is by CHOICE!!!! If you aren't sure why you are here, think about what your 'bliss' is. What is the one thing that makes your soul soar? You may not remember why you are here, but you are here because your soul chose to come here at this time and grow. You made a contract.
Every day life provides choices, opportunities and experiences to help you fulfill your contract. The decision to live your contract fully lies with you. When your time here is finished, you'll sit down once again as a soul and have a meeting with the masters. You'll review what you accomplished, what you failed at and what was your overall human experience.
Everything you face here has to do with your soul's growth. I urge you to live fully, completely and with presence. By living with presence, you'll have a wonderful human experience and your soul will SOAR!!!
